Carey Price Amazing Journey

Carey Price grew up in Anahim Lake in British Columbia in Canada. The nearest hockey team being over 300 miles away. In order for him to pursue his dreams of playing hockey his parents purchased a plane in order to fly to and from practice each day. A very unconventional way to travel to practice.
Price's mother was a first nations chief and they had to live in Anahim lake.

Price's parents investment paid of as he was the first goaltender selected in the bantam draft 7th overall to the WHL by the Tri-City Americans, this was an impressive feat as Price went on to be the backbone of the Tri-City Americans and earning a spot on the team Canada world junior team in 2007 where he lead them to a Gold Medal along with winning goaltender of the tournament.

Carey Price's impressive performance in juniors allowed him to be selected 5th overall by the Montreal Canadiens. After being put in the AHL team, Carey Price then went on to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs to the Calder Cup as a teenager. A feat that is very rare for any player.

After the impressive stint Carey Price has enjoyed an impressive NHL career for the Montreal Canadiens where two years ago he took home the impressive quadruple crown during the NHL awards collecting the Vezina, Jennings, Lindsay and Hart trophy. Vezina for goaltender of the year, Jennings for the lowest goals against, Lindsay for MVP voted by the players and the Hart for the MVP of the NHL.

On top of these feats, Carey Price also led the Canadian Olympic team to a Gold medal at the 2014 games in Russia.

It is important for all goaltender to find the right path for their success whether it is the route of major junior hockey or the NCAA division I or II

In order to make the jump to major junior the process must be made at a young age, there is a 15 year old draft that takes players based on skill and potential at a young age, this route is the quickest step for players looking to make it the NHL, however it is not always the best. Very few goaltenders are drafted in the NHL these days as they can be found through free agency and teams in the NHL like to have more developed goaltenders rather than take a chance on a young kid.

The alternate route for goaltenders to take is the route of junior "A" and then on to the NCAA, the benefits of this route is that it allows goaltenders to mature into the goaltenders they are instead of a team taking a chance on potential. This path can be difficult as there are many different junior routes to take one to the NCAA. An added benefit is the education factor. The best leagues that allow for such routes is the USHL or the BCHL in which most players are committed out of each year.

Jacques Plante for example was the first goaltender to ever wear a mask in the NHL. Something we would see today as being unheard of, as goaltenders are forced to wear protective equipment

Glenn Hall played for the Chicago Blackhawks and earned the Iron Man award in for NHL goalies with 502 consecutive games played. Unheard of in todays game and a feat that will never be matched as goaltenders never play more than 15 or 20 consecutive games in a season let alone 502.

Georges Vezina was a goaltender who played in the early 20s for the Montreal Canadiens, the award for the best goaltender in the NHL is named after him. Vezina had a tragic story as he died of tuberculosis and had a rather short NHL career.

Box Control

In the recent years goaltending has developed in a way in which were seeing smaller goaltenders. The reason for this is the understanding of box control which is the net within the net. Kinda confusing? Here is a video to help understand. 

As you can see the trajectory of the puck is from the ice therefore looking at what our eye see's and what the puck sees is different. Goalies use this box control in order to take up the most amount of room without necessarily being a big person. The difference in seeing the puck and what the puck sees is called the shooters illusion. Take a look at the difference

As you can see the shooters view sees more of the left side of the net while the puck shows very little room on that side, this is where box control comes into place in playing the net in front of you and not necessarily what the shooter is playing. 

NHL Contouring Goalie Equipment

The National Hockey League is attempting to refine goaltenders equipment mid-season in order for goal scoring to rise. The past few years, goal scoring has steadily decreased, the NHL believes that the oversized protection goaltenders wear are the reasons for this, thus contouring them in order to create more goals.

This is the difference to what the NHL wants to do to alter goalie equipment, although it is subtle, keep in mind the puck is a few inches wide.

                           

The question to ask here is whether or not the goaltenders will be able to adapt in time to become competitive. Personally I believe these guys are professionals and will have no problem adapting to these changes. This isn't the first time the NHL has tried to change the rules to lead to more goal scoring. After the lockout goalies pad size decreased along with the trapezoid behind then net that prohibits them from playing the puck. The NHL also cracked down on penalties causing for more offensive chances. All of these changes and still the NHL continues, maybe these guy are just that good. They've adapted before and they will adapt again.
